Case Study

One retail outlet becomes three

One retail outlet becomes three

“I first came to Santander because they offered better rates on my existing finance, but they’ve since helped the business to expand a lot. Others asked me to jump through hoops, but Santander knows my business and trusts my judgement. The customer service is very good, and I like being able to speak to my Relationship Director, even outside office hours. And using the Post Office® is very convenient – it used to take me half an hour to pay in cash, so now I save a lot of time.”

Proprietor, Rashid Aziz

Entrepreneur Rashid Aziz owns three retail businesses in South Wales: a Spar convenience store with a petrol station that turns over £4.2 million annually, a second convenience store and a pub. The three businesses are all managed hands-on by Rashid, with support from his family. Because the businesses generate a lot of cash, good day-to-day banking support is crucial, as is a strong working relationship with the bank – which Rashid has with his Relationship Director. Rashid is dedicated to improving the customer experience across his businesses (he has refurbished the store interiors), ploughing profits back into the business and seizing on good opportunities to expand.

Solution delivered

Rashid approached Santander Corporate Banking in January 2010 on the recommendation of a friend, having banked elsewhere for ten years. Santander refinanced the loan for his existing retail premises at lower charges, saving the business money. Six months down the line, Santander was happy to provide finance when Rashid decided to purchase a second outlet in July 2010, and in March 2011 supported him again to expand by acquiring a pub. The businesses are flourishing, with healthy credit balances, and Santander now provides a full banking service. Rashid enjoys a strong working relationship with the Santander team, and is looking at expanding even further.

  • Support for expansion – Since teaming up with Santander, Rashid has been able to buy two new retail outlets, helping him achieve his goal of expansion
  • Competitive finance charges – Rashid was initially brought to Santander by the low financing costs, which gave him more profit to invest in the businesses
  • Trusted partner – Rashid can talk to his Relationship Director whenever he needs, and works closely with the Santander team on day-to-day issues
  • Post Office® branch network – As a retailer with high cash turnover, being able to manage cash through Post Office® branches is a big time-saver
